چکیده

The gamma-ray burst GRB 060218 is an important event because of its very low redshift z = 0.0331, its low isotropic–equivalent radiated energy E iso ∼ 7 × 10 49 erg and its clear association with a supernova (SN) event (SN 2006aj). Under these respects, GRB 060218 is the event most similar to GRB 980425, the proto–type event of the GRB–SN connection. However, while the peak energy E p,i and E iso values of GRB 980425 are inconsistent with the E p,i – E iso (Amati) correlation holding for long GRBs/XRFs, GRB 060218 is fully consistent with it. One of the popular explanations of the inconsistency of GRB 980425 with the E p,i – E iso correlation is that it was a 'normal' GRBs seen off-axis. Our result implies that this is not the case for GRB 060218. This is also confirmed by the 'chromatic' behavior of the afterglow light curves measured by Swift. In this Letter we discuss some implications of our finding on the present understanding of the GRB/SN connection.

On the consistency of peculiar GRBs 060218 and 060614 with the E p , i – E iso correlation

We analyze and discuss the position of GRB 060218 and GRB 060614 in the E p,i – E iso plane. GRB 060218 is important because of its similarity with GRB 980425, the proto–type event of the GRB–SN connection. While GRB 980425 is an outlier of the E p,i – E iso correlation, we find that GRB 060218 is fully consistent with it. This evidence, combined with the 'chromatic' behavior of the afterglow l...

Implications of the consistency of the peculiar GRBs 060218 and 060614 with the E p , i – E iso correlation

We analyze and discuss the location in the E p,i – E iso plane of two peculiar Gamma–Ray Bursts: GRB 060218 and GRB 060614. GRB 060218 is important because of its very low redshift z = 0.033, its low isotropic–equivalent radiated energy E iso ∼ 7 × 10 49 erg and its clear association with a supernova (SN) event (SN 2006aj). The supernova SN 2006aj associated with GRB 060218 is the second-closest GRB-SN observed to date (z=0.033) and is the clearest example of a SN associated with a Swift GRB with the earliest optical spectroscopy. Its optical data showed that this is the fastest evolving and among the least luminous GRB-SNe (70% as luminous as SN1998bw). However, its expansion velocity and a comparison with other ...

We present SMARTS consortium optical/IR light curves of SN 2006aj associated with GRB 060218. We find that this event is broadly similar to two previously observed events SN 1998bw/GRB 980425 and SN 2003lw/GRB 031203. In particular, all of these events are greatly under-luminous in gamma-rays compared to typical long-duration GRBs. We find that the observation by Swift of even one such event im...
